Fall is in the Air!

It may still be warmer during the day, but fall is definitely in the air with the brisk mornings and the cooler evenings. Do you know what that means? It is time to start bringing out all the fall colors in your decorations and gardens! Here are some fall favorites to get you started.

Mums are definitely a fall favorite. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your mums for a longer period of time. Mums are a flower that prefer the cool temperatures. Stores may start selling them now, but with our local OKC/Edmond Metro area weather, it is still too hot for them to survive. Purchase your mums when the temps start to drop and the flowers will last much longer. You also want to try and choose mums that have not fully bloomed, this will also allow you to enjoy them longer. The most ideal time to put out your mums would be mid to late September if you want to get the most time out of them.

So many people want only to put flowers in their gardens or planter boxes, but why not change it up and add some fall foliage. Here are a few different types that will bring fun colors and textures, Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’, ‘Charity’ grape holly, ‘Stoplight’ foamy bells, and ‘Nagoya’ kale. All of these will last through the first frost.

Don’t forget about those pumpkins! Pumpkins are a wonderful addition to your garden or fall outdoor decorations. A great way to give your pumpkins a good shine and for them to stand out in your garden, is to spray them with a clear lacquer (clear spray paint). Not only does spraying your pumpkins make them look pretty, it also helps them to last longer.
