Does your porch need a little makeover, but you don’t want to spend a lot to do it. Here are ways to DIY by rekindling your old furniture and not purchasing new.

WOOD Furniture – Prep: Give it a good scrub with 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. Sand until smooth. Prime: For bare woods use an oil based primer to seal. Kilz Original Exterior and Interior Primer, $9 homedepot.com Paint: Use an exterior grade latex formula, this will protect against mildew and UV. WICKER Furniture – Prep: Use a stiff brush to wipe off excess paint and debris. Wash with water and a mild detergent. Prime: Once the wicker is dry, apply an outdoor safe oil based spray primer (one that is suitable for wood). Adding this primer will add a layer of protection against the outdoor elements. Paint: Use an outdoor safe spray paint, this will ensure that it reaches all the nooks and crannies. Hold the can 8-10 inches away for an even coat. Krylon ColorMaxx Paint + Primer, $5 lowes.com 

METAL Furniture – Prep: Remove any signs of wear with a wire brush. Give it a good wash with an all purpose cleaner or a mild dish detergent. Prime: Add a rust resistant primer to help with future corrosion. The level of tarnish of your set will determine the amount of primer it will need. Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer Spray $5 homedepot.com Paint: Oil based paint is the most durable when it comes to metal. Water based paints can promote rust.
