3 Tips for Protecting Your Home This Winter

unnamedEven though it may be warm outside today, at SpiritBank Mortgage we know that protecting your home is one of your top priorities.  As colder weather approaches, we have some tips to keep you comfortable in your house all season.

1- Reduce the risk of ice dams.

  • Make sure your gutters are free of leaves and debris.
  • Keep the attic well ventilated so snow doesn’t melt and refreeze on the roof’s edge.
  • Make sure the attic floor is well insulated to minimize the amount of heat rising through the attic from within the house.

2- Perform draft tests.

  • To identify trouble spots, wet your finger and move it along the area in question to feel for  drafts, or shine a bright flashlight around these areas to see if light shines through.
  • Check wall joints, light fixtures, electrical outlets, windows and door frames to interior walls, attic doors and ceilings, and plumbing penetrations for air leakage.
  • Seal off air leaks by installing additional insulation or new windows. For a quick-fix, use weather-stripping to fill gaps and minimize air infiltration.

3- Change the direction of your ceiling fans.

  • If the air in your home feels hot and trapped and turning on a fan only produces cool air, turn your fan to a clockwise rotation to produce warmer air.
  • This method could cut your heating bill by up to 10%.

We hope you found these tips helpful.
